Get inside the mind of Volcom team rider Ozzie Wright—“the guy who wrote the book, err, song on Strange Brains.”

Strange Brains is a rider-produced series of webisodes from the “strange brains” at Volcom profiling heavy moments in the lives of all of their team riders: “a celebration of your mental calibration.” In these webisodes, Volcom celebrates the weird underworld of surfing’s craziest characters.

In this latest episode that aired last week, Ozzie steps up to the plate and does his rad indie fun-focused artsy thing on the waves. Check out Ozzie taking apart some really fun lefts , and jamming out with his band, Goons of Doom.

If you missed the first three webisodes, here’s a recap:

Episode #1 with Alex Gray (Aired Dec 18, 2012)
In this premiere episode of Strange Brains, Alex Gray talks about losing his brother and how it’s motivated him to rush the biggest, craziest waves in the world.

Episode #2 with Andrew Doheny (Aired January 21, 2013)
Made completely by Droid and his pal/filmer Matt Tromberg (music and all), check out his “strange brain” – it’s a little crazy, a little experimental and a lot entertaining.

Episode #3 with Zeke Lau (Aired January 28, 2013)
An inside look at Oahu powerhouse Zeke Lau as he tears it up from California to Bali and back. Check out the North Shore’s young powerhouse’s mad aerial skills.

Yes, the waves will come, usually up to six feet, but good luck trying to get the staple surf gear in Cuba.

Imagine if things we take for granted such as surf wax, new boards or simple online surf reports were hard to come by. Add Cuban policies, combined with the American blockade, plus a lack of transportation, and this is surfing in Cuba – indeed, a complicated endeavor.

But, as we know, once the surfing bug has got ya, nothing’s going to stop your love of the waves. So, the sport persists in Cuba through the determination of native surfers and homegrown organizations like Royal 70, a nonprofit surf collective founded by Cuban native and surfer Eduardo Valdes and Blair Cording, an Australian surfer. To date, there have been two national surf contests in Havana, one attracting the sponsorship of Red Bull. Another national contest is scheduled for later this month.

Read the insightful article about it recently written up in The New York Times here: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/12/sports/cuban-surfers-face-hurdles-before-catching-waves.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&

An interesting quote by a surfer quoted in the story: “My mom would punish me for going to the beach. I had to sneak out of my house or skip school classes if I wanted to try to surf for the first five years. I even hid my board at a friend’s house.”

Wow! Can you imagine? Continue reading
