Non-profit humanitarian organization, SurfAid International, announced yesterday, the launch of their new website surfaidinternational.org. SurfAid is now into its 12th year of work in the remote island chain off Sumatra, Indonesia, after being started by a group of concerned surfers in 2000.
It’s a bummer surfing over trash floating in the ocean, but did you ever think of surfing on trash? RISD art graduate and founder of Spirare Surfboards, Kevin Cunningham, thought so.

The photograph has survived decades and it is considered the first picture of a surfer. The Hawaiian beach boy is photographed wearing a traditional loin cloth and shown standing in the shallows holding his rudimentary board.
