In honor of founder Jack O’Neill and his numerous contributions to the world of surfing and action sports, O’Neill recently released a gorgeous coffee table book, Jack O’Neill: It’s Always Summer on the Inside, which celebrates the contributions and innovations O’Neill has brought to both action sports and surfing, and the company’s up and coming 60th anniversary.

Jack O’Neill is a maverick, a pioneer and the legendary man behind the wetsuit and first surf shop. In the mid 20th century, surfing was pretty much confined to warm-water latitudes and summer seasons. By the end of the century, however, and due to O’Neill’s invention of the wet suit, surfers were riding waves in some of the most remote coldwater corners of the world in the dead of winter!

The book features 256 pages filled with stories and anecdotes of Jack O’Neill’s legendary adventures. Each chapter is a compilation of short narratives and impactful historical imagery, from his early years in Southern California and Oregon to San Francisco, where he invented the surfing wetsuit, to Santa Cruz, where he built an international business by effectively defying the seasons. The story is told in Jack’s own words as well as dozens of contributors, including Bruce Brown, Shaun Tomson, Robby Naish, Tom Curren, Phil Edwards, Fred Van Dyke, Mike Doyle, Martin Potter, Ken “Skindog” Collins, Dane Kealoha, Joey Buran, Jim Philips, Jim Foley, Jack LaLanne, and Jordy Smith.

“My motivation has always been fueled by the waves and the ocean,” said Jack O’Neill. “In fact, I’ve been working for most of my life to find ways that we can all better appreciate and enjoy this fantastic planet. To have a book telling the story of my life and my journey is a true honor,” he added, “but, more importantly, I hope my story will inspire others to look past their limitations and to think toward the future with greater respect for Mother Nature.”

A percentage of the book’s sales will be donated to the O’Neill Sea Odyssey, a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental education program. Of course, you can find the book here at Becker: http://beckersurf.com/oneill/40340

A few weeks ago, we wrote about the collaboration between Billabong and surf artist Andy Davis. Well, we’re psyched that Andy will be coming out to our Becker stores doing some art on trucker caps for anyone that purchases something in the Billabong Andy Davis collection. If you haven’t checked out the collection, it’s a cool collaboration with a sweet new range of apparel celebrating the fun and funk of surfing’s bohemian lifestyle.

Andy is renowned for his stylized illustrations depicting the joy and camaraderie of the surfing life, so we’re thrilled he will also be autographing posters for all.

Here’s his schedule, with his first stop at our Hermosa store this Saturday:
Feb. 4th Hermosa 1-3pm
March 1st Mission Viejo 6-8pm (After Hours Event)
May 10th Malibu 6-8pm (After Hours Event)
June 7th Second Reef 6-9 pm (Art Walk night)

He will probably set up his little mini-studio in the stores. We can’t wait to welcome Andy to our Becker house! He is a great guy and should be a lot of fun, so come and join us. We look forward to seeing you!

In the meantime, check out the cool line here. http://beckersurf.com/guys/clothing/andy-davis-x-billabong/

The Board Art Benefit, a project that first began last October and is designed to bring leading artists and shapers together to create original works of art utilizing surfboards for the purpose of raising support for SurfAid International, had its first 2012 event last Saturday, January 21st in Solana Beach, CA.

The event, held at the Aaron Chang Ocean Art Gallery, had 15 surfboards decorated by esteemed surf artists on display. Art patrons and artists alike crowded the sidewalks of Cedros Avenue to view the works of art, which included thrusters, alaias, single fins, retro shapes and more; each piece a collaboration between shaper and artist. In addition, a blank longboard was transformed into a board art collective over the course of the evening, as each artist contributed with their own live, in-house painting.

The aim of the Board Art Benefit is to provide a great venue for the participating artists to showcase their work, to provide the public with a great chance to see collections of amazing hand-crafted board art in one place, and to support SurfAid International.

The finished boards will later be auctioned, with the final live auction of the finished boards tentatively scheduled for sometime during the summer of 2012.

The Board Art Benefit is an artist-driven project, and is not directly affiliated with SurfAid International, but funds raised will directly support SurfAid’s humanitarian efforts on the Mentawai and Nias islands in Indonesia.
