Legendary tattoo artist Mike Giant will have his first highly anticipated solo show, “Confessions of an Old Dirty Skateboarder” at Fecalface Gallery in San Francisco. There will be an opening reception for the show tonight, July 20th (7-10pm). The artist will be present.

“Confessions of an Old Dirty Skateboarder” will feature a wide assemblage of recent drawings and also a rare opportunity to view Giant’s personal collection of skateboards he illustrated the graphics for, including boards from his early career.

“I’m a product of my generation. I grew up through the 80s and was drawn to the punk rock and hip-hop cultures simultaneously”, Giant said in a recent interview. “I threw myself in headfirst. A lot of those things were about personal expression, and also an anti-establishment attitude like, “We don’t need you, we have our own thing. That’s the backbone of who I am to this day.”

Aside from his usual array of graphic works for his brand REBEL8, San Francisco based Mike Giant has achieved fame as a graffiti artist, illustrator and tattooist. Black ink is Giant’s specialty and whether his medium is concrete, paper or skin, his signature style – inspired by Mexican folk art and Japanese illustration – is unmistakable.

Mike Giant has worked in media covering, graffiti, design, fine art, photography and tattooing, making him one of the most celebrated and versatile artists of his generation. He has shown in galleries around the world.

Beer and wine will be available at tonight’s premiere reception, and the show will run until August, 12, 2012.

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) will once again have its annual Waterman’s Weekend this coming August 10-12 at the Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel, CA. Now in its 23rd year, the event has served as the main fundraising source for the SIMA Environmental Fund.

This year, the Waterman’s Ball will honor big wave surfer Shane Dorian as Waterman of the Year, world renowned ocean explorer, filmmaker, television personality and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau as Environmentalist of the Year, and revolutionary wave forecaster and surfing Hall of Famer the late Sean Collins with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Waterman’s Weekend is a two-day fundraising event held each August that exclusively benefits the SIMA Environmental Fund, a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation that awards grants to various environmental groups based on their dedication to preserving and protecting the world’s oceans, beaches and waves. The weekend event begins Friday, August 10, with the Waterman’s Classic Golf Tournament at the Monarch Beach Golf Links, featuring a lively day on the links, a surf contest, and live and silent auctions, and culminates with the main event on Saturday, August 11, the 23rd annual Waterman’s Ball and auction to be held at The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, CA. The ball not only allows the surf industry and friends of the environment to raise money for important oceanic causes, but also honor and celebrate those making significant contributions in the industry with the prestigious annual Waterman of the Year, Environmentalist of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards.

Last year’s events attracted more than 700 people and raised more than $400,000 for 20 ocean conservation groups. Here is the list of the 2012 SIMA Environmental Fund grant recipients:

Starting to get Olympic fever, but wish there was something for surfers? Well, surfers from around the world have their own version of Olympic competition. The Nicaragua ISA World Masters Surfing Championship begins tomorrow, July 14, with the Opening Ceremony, Parade of Nations and Sands of the World Ceremony in Rivas, and competition along Nicaragua’s pristine coastline at Colorado Beach at Hacienda Iguana to commence the following day. Team USA will be defending its gold medal.

The International Surfing Association hosts contests through the year in various categories of surf – including juniors, SUP, and longboarding divisions. The ISA, established in 1964, is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the world governing authority for surfing, but the sport has yet to make its breakthrough at the official Olympic Games.

During the first year of the event (2007), 66 athletes from 12 nations participated. When competition begins at the 2012 Nicaragua ISA World Masters Surfing Championship on July 14th, there will be 150 surfers from 27 nations, both ISA Masters records. The caliber of athletes who are competing in Nicaragua include national champions and local legends to former professional surfers and Pipeline Masters.

This year, for the first time in the five-year history of the event, an Asian country will be participating, with Japan sending a team to compete.

Last year, the USA sent a team to compete in the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship for the first time and came home with five individual medals and the Team Gold Medal. Team USA is set to prove that last year’s dominance was no fluke. The athletes will be competing for individual medals, team medals and the perpetual Eduardo Arena Trophy, which will be awarded to the Gold Medal-winning team.

One of the goals of the ISA is to take competitions to developing regions to showcase surfing, to help boost economy and get governments involved. It also helps various cultures and all walks of life have a chance at the podium.

The idea is for surfers to make friends with others in various parts of the world, perhaps stay at each other’s houses during future surf trips, and make friends that will last a lifetime; just as many who are entered in the ISA World Masters Championships have done.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre has been a longtime advocate for surfing to one day be a part of the Summer Olympics, and thinks it can change the event the way snowboarding has for the Winter Olympics.

“I don’t embark on things I don’t think are possible,” said Aguerre, a co-founder of the surfwear brand Reef.

Who else thinks it’s only just a matter of time for surfing to become an Olympic sport? In the meantime, check out more of the action and info here: isawmsc.com.
