“This Time Tomorrow” Film Premiere Tomorrow November 8, 2012

This Time Tomorrow, the latest film from Taylor Steele which made its world premiere headliner at the New York Surf Film Festival this past September, will premiere at The Malibu Inn tomorrow night, Thursday, November 8, 2012. A live performance by punk surf band Agent Orange will follow.

The film follows Dave Rastovich and Craig Anderson as they chase last year’s infamous “Condition Black” swell from Tahiti to Mexico to California to Alaska, surfing the same waves in each location. It’s a crazy and exciting run, and the film really conveys the “happiness through exhaustion” that Rasta noted about the filming of the movie.

The film documents an epic pacific swell chase over 8 days and 18,000 miles traveled. Rasta and Ando track waves generated from this single storm in an exhausting attempt to surf the same wave twice as they go Eastward through the Pacific. They head through Teahupo’o to endless points breaks of Mexico and onwards toward a frosty Arctic conclusion. They also catch up with friends Kelly Slater, Chris del Moro, Alex Grey and Dan Molloy in their journey.

This Time Tomorrow Film Premier starts at 9:00pm.

Agent Orange, one of the first bands to mix punk rock with surf music, will perform afterwards at 10:30pm.

There will be raffle prizes throughout the night, from Billabong, FreedomArtist, BubuLulu, Go Pro, and yours truly, Becker Surf. We will also have a local night’s sale at our Becker Malibu store from 6-8pm before the film.

Proceeds from the raffle will go towards Jimmy Gamboa’s Therasurf. THERAsurf is committed to the belief that there is healing energy in the power of the ocean. The goal is to provide children with special needs the opportunity to benefit from that positive energy by safely getting them into the water, and up on waves.

It’s Movember!

During November each year, Movember (a mash-up of the words “mustache” and “November”) is responsible for the sprouting of mustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. An annual, month-long, global movement beginning November 1st, the mustache growing is aimed to raise awareness and funds of men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

Since the movement’s beginnings in 2004 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros (male participants) and Mo Sistas (female supporters) in countries including New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Canada (which is the largest contributor to the Movember charities).

Earlier this year, the Global Journal listed Movember as one of the top 100 NGOs (non government organization) in the world. Since its inception, Movember has raised over $300 million dollars.

Who’s up for joining in the cause this month? Here are the rules of conduct as noted on the Movember site:

  1. Once registered at movember.com each mo bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face.
  2. For the entire month of November each mo bro must grow and groom a moustache.
  3. There is to be no joining of the mo to [one's] sideburns. (That’s considered a beard.)
  4. There is to be no joining of the handlebars to [one's] chin. (That’s considered a goatee.)
  5. Each mo bro must conduct himself like a true country gentleman.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas will celebrate by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

So, get growing! We look forward to spotting a ton more mustaches this month in support of Movember.

Andy Irons Remembered 2 Years After Passing Away

Another year has gone by, but all our memories of Andy Irons remain as strong as ever. On this second anniversary of his passing (November 2nd) we celebrate his life and impact on surfing and all those who loved him for who he was. The entire Billabong family wishes to take a moment to join the surfing world in remembering one of the greatest surfers and personalities our sport has ever known.

Out of respect and acknowledgement of Andy’s legacy we continue to dedicate the Billabong Pipe Masters in his memory.

Billabong is also proud to announce the new global AI Forever collection for release in Summer 2013 in stores and online March 15, in the USA. Proceeds from the AI Forever line will go toward ongoing guaranteed support for Andy’s wife Lyndie and young son Axel.

Andy Irons continues to touch hearts and minds of so many in the surf community – “AI Forever” says it all!

It’s Just Days Away! The 2012 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which runs from November 12 – December 20 in the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, will celebrate its 30th anniversary with $1Million in prize money. This year, there will also be a one-time $100,000 winner-takes-all cash bonus for the Triple Crown champion. Other goodies for the winner include a $30,000 Harley Davidson motorcycle from JN Automotive, and a custom $10,000 jewel encrusted Nixon watch.

Obviously, the Triple Crown of Surfing is a 3-event series. The final event of the 3-event series — the Billabong Pipe Masters — is the final event of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour and will crown the year’s ASP World Surfing Champion.

The Vans Triple Crown champion title is awarded to the top performing surfer after all three of the events of the series:

  1. THE REEF HAWAIIAN PRO
    Nov. 12-24, Haleiwa Ali’i Beach
    ASP Prime Prize Purse: $250,000
    Defending Champion: Taj Burrow (Australia)
  2. THE VANS WORLD CUP OF SURFING
    Nov. 25-Dec.6, Sunset Beach
    ASP Prime Prize Purse: $250,000
    Defending Champion: John John Florence (Hawaii)
  3. THE BILLABONG PIPE MASTERS
    Dec. 8-20, Banzai Pipeline
    ASP World Tour Prize Purse: $425,000
    Defending Champion: Kieren Perrow (Australia)

25 of the top 32 ranked surfers in the world are entered into the series, which pretty much guarantees an exciting surfing battle. We’re looking forward to watching 11-time world champion Kelly Slater and defending champion John John Florence, who last year at aged 19 became the youngest surfer to ever win the Triple Crown title, carve the waves. Slater last won the title in 1998.

This will be the largest global broadcast of professional surfing in history, broadcasting events into more than 200 million homes worldwide. . A list of networks and stations by country will be posted to www.vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com as soon as it is available.

HIC PRO Signals Start to Hawaii’s Winter Surf Season

Is it Winter already? Yes, according to the Hawaii surf schedule. The first major winter swell is preparing to hit the Hawaiian Islands, just in time for the HIC PRO at Sunset Beach, starting Monday, October 29, and running through November 10. The HIC PRO, a $95,000 4-star rated Association of Surfing Professionals event, launches the 2012/13 North Shore big wave winter competition season.

The HIC PRO, known as a launching pad for local rising surf stars, offers critical points for surfers looking to elevate their international ranking and is a local qualifier for the 30th Anniversary $1 Million Vans Triple Crown of Surfing that will follow from November 12 through December 20.

A total of 144 surfers from 13 nations will compete in the HIC PRO, with half of its representation by local Hawaii surfers. The 4-star rating of the event makes it a critical source of ASP ratings points for all who have entered. Athletes will come from as far away as Argentina, France, and Australia.

The defending champion is 18-year old Ezekiel Lau, who just graduated from Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu and who just last week placed second in the ASP World Junior Championships in Bali. According to Lau, “I’m not approaching [the HIC PRO] as defending champion. It’s a brand new year, so it’s time to start all fresh and do it all over again. But I’m comfortable at home, I’m feeling relaxed, and I’ll just do what I have to do.”

The newly crowned ASP World Junior champion – Australia’s Jack Freestone – is also entered into the event. Other notable HIC PRO contenders include Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz, 6-time Vans Triple Crown champion Sunny Garcia, former HIC Pro champions Billy Kemper, Pancho Sullivan and Myles Padaca, and Maui’s Ian Walsh and Clay Marzo. International contenders include #1 seed Jean De Silva (Brazil), former world champion Mark Occhilupo (Australia), and Joan Duru (France).

The HIC PRO will be webcast live at www.vans.com/hicpro, and broadcast on Oceanic Time Warner Cable in Hawaii and on the US West Coast on Time Warner Cable SportsNet (check local listings).
