Looking to protect our coastal heritage and an excuse to party, too? Save The Waves Coalition, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of surfing coastline and the marine environment, will be throwing a “Beach & Bonfire Bash” the evening of September 24th. Hosts Kevin Hillyer & Tanna Frederick/Project Save Our Surf will head up the special celebration of coastal environmentalism to benefit Save The Waves Coalition and their World Surfing Reserves Initiative at The Beach Club in Santa Monica, CA.
The Save The Waves Coalition is a group of devoted surfers, scientists, and activists that share a common belief that our wild coastal areas around the world are precious and valuable, and need to be protected. Unfortunately, some of the world’s best surfing waves have vanished forever, buried by large coastal developments. Killer Dana, Petacalco, and La Barre, are just some examples of formerly among the world’s best, and now buried without much help or focus.
This problem will only continue to get worse as the world population of surfers grows, as overcrowding in the line-up has become a pervasive problem.
Through an emphasis on the surf zone, and educating the public about its value, Save The Waves employs many strategies and tactics to help protect and preserve surfing coastline around the world. These include educational programs, research studies that provide hard data to help policy makers make smart decisions, and provide conservationists with powerful tools for protection, documentary films that help educate the general public about the importance of protecting irreplaceable coastal resources, and global enshrinement programs which help proactively designate and protect special surfing areas, before they ever fall under threat.
