SURFING Magazine’s Baby Cobras Contest is coming to a close. Baby Cobras, a competition for aspiring creative surfers, began this past August and has now narrowed it down to 6 finalists for each of its 3 categories – writers, photographers, and film-makers.
The contest was created for creative surfers who could work at a magazine, make a movie, or get those shots — maybe even better than the actual SURFING Magazine staff.
Participants (between the ages of 18 and 27, live in the USA and not work for any other surf media) were asked to tell a story about their home break in their medium of choice – through words, photos or video.
- Video: Upload video that’s under 3 minutes
- Photos: Create a photo series of between 5 and 10 photos
- Writing: Upload a piece that’s between 100 and 1,000 words
All entries were then uploaded to the SURFING Magazine Facebook page, and submissions were voted by the public, who selected five winners from the all of the entries in each category. SURFING Magazine also selected one wildcard from each category. Six hopefuls per category are now headed to the final round. They will be given the chance to edit their work and resubmit for final judging by the SURFING staff. The overall three winners (one from each category) will be announced November 1st.
SURFING Magazine will send each of the three winners to Hawaii to document a week on the North Shore season, which will be published online and in the magazine.
There’s a taste of some of the photography finalists’ submissions. Check out www.surfingmagazine.com for more of their awesome creativity.
