We may all know Alana Blanchard, 22, as an American professional surfer (and one of the best female surfers at that). I mean, Alana does surf on the ASP World Tour – nothing to sneeze at. But now we can add to her resume: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model. Alana is in the SI Swimsuit 2013 edition that just hit newsstands.

It was pretty much a no-brainer to include Alana in the issue according to MJ Day, senior editor of SI Swimsuit. “She embodies the ideal that we strive to represent at SI Swimsuit. Beautiful, healthy, active and empowered, Alana charges waves and life the way we do here at Swimsuit. She is the ultimate beach girl and she can rock a bikini like nobody’s business!”

Check out the issue where she models some fab Rip Curl bikinis, which she has been involved in designing for the past 3 years.

Plus, check out the video below from Sports Illustrated on Alana. Alana was photographed by James Macari in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Becker Surfboards, one of the original surfboard builders and surf shops in the South Bay, will be the main sponsor this year at the 3rd stop of the annual South Bay Surf Series, to be held Saturday, March 9th, 7am-5pm, at 26th St. in Manhattan Beach. Last year’s event had well over 200 contestants surfing, in addition to the hundreds of attendees that came throughout the day. There will once again be board demos, raffles, food, drink and an assortment of beach activities open to all in attendance, contestants and non-contestants alike.

The South Bay Surf Series is a six-event series of contests meant to bring the stoke to the tight knit South Bay community of surfers and beach goers. Along with Becker, additional sponsors include: Billabong, XCEL, Sector 9, South Bay Toyota, Von Zipper, Kustom, Air Pacific, Dakine, and Watermans Restaurant.

Today is AI (Andy Irons) day. The Governor of Hawaii declared February 13, 2013 as Andy Irons Day. Forever. Irons learned to surf on the dangerous and shallow reefs of the North Shore in Kauai, Hawaii.

As we know, Andy’s life touched thousands of surfers everywhere with his surfing skills, determination, and personality of smiles and fires. He sadly left us and the surfing world when he was only 32 on November 2, 2010… much too young and too soon. Andy is survived by his wife Lyndie and son Andy Axel Irons, who was born 2 months after his death.

In honor of Andy, the only surfer to have won a title at every venue on the ASP calendar, check out his “I Surf Because” video above, his biggest wipeout video below

And here are some of his most famous quotes:

I am the people’s champ.
I can’t get mad at losing if the guy I lost to wins the contest.
I have my friends, and I surf because it’s what I have always loved doing.
To me, failure is not living up to my potential.
You got to go in the mud sometimes to figure who you are.

Make sure to check out the AI collection here. Find out the background story behind all the tees here. Continue reading

Current World Junior Champion, Jack Freestone, is currently starring in a new episode of Fairly Normal, which debuted last Wednesday.

Fairly Normal is a new series that chronicles the somewhat peculiar domestic situations surfers have come to find normal around the globe, giving you a pretty interesting look at what these traveling athletes consider normal.

This one’s a cool episode featuring Jack. Many of you may have seen his breakthrough performance in Dear Suburbia — which saw him do some amazing moves at Indo’s cutest beachbreak next to Dane, Kolohe and Taj without missing a beat.

Check out the episode to gain an inside look at a perfect day with Jack. This includes “coffee, shit-talking, a fun surf at D-Bah, lunch, shit-talking resumes, another really fun surf at Kirra, a beer on the veranda, barbecue. Fin!”

He also stars in a very candid conversation/interview in What Youth Issue 3, which is available this Thursday, February 14th. Surfer LOVE! Continue reading
