On Saturday, September 1, 2012, members of the surf community will participate in the “Paddle for Daisy” in support of Al Merrick’s eight-year old granddaughter Daisy as she battles cancer for the third time.
At only eight years old, she has received six surgeries, 22 rounds of chemotherapy and two courses of radiation to fight against the aggressive and reoccurring Wilms Tumor. After insurance, treatments and travel will still cost half a million dollars.
In order to defray the costs, surfers around the world are rallying to support the brave young girl, including professional ambassadors Courtney Conlogue, Bethany Hamilton, Tom Curren, Rob Machado, CJ and Damien Hobgood, Will Tant, Sage Erickson, Nate Yeomans, Matt Pagan, Matt Beacham and Lakey Peterson.
Billabong family sponsors include Sector 9, Nixon, and Dakine.
While Daisy left earlier this month for Israel for a stem cell transplant, on September 1st, a series of Paddle For Daisy events will go down simultaneously all over the country: the West and East coasts, Hawaii, the Midwest and the Gulf Coast, in support of her.
The event schedule:
8:45 am – Arrive at local paddle location
9:00 am – Photo for Daisy
9:10 am – Pray for Daisy
9:15 am – Paddle for Daisy
You can also text “DAISY” to 56512 to donate $10 to the Merrick family. All donations are tax deductible through Christian Surfers, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Continue reading
