In case you’ve forgotten that one of our favorite and best selling brands, Volcom, made literal waves when it was founded in 1991 as the first company to combine surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding all under one brand, it has recently … Continue reading

If you haven’t already heard, two weeks ago, Brazilian big wave surfer Carlos Burle may have tackled the biggest wave ever surfed.
Praia do Norte, at the Portuguese town of Nazare, is renowned for its huge swells — and on Tuesday, October 26, Burle caught one of these, estimated to be around 100 feet high (this after he helped save fellow Brazilian Maya Gabeira out of the pummeling surf after she was knocked unconscious).
Gabeira, one of the world’s leading female big-wave surfers, was taken to hospital and luckily escaped with just a broken ankle, while Burle is hoping to have his feat ratified as a Guinness World Record.
The wave measured some 100 feet in height—much higher than the confirmed 2011 Guinness world record of 78 feet set by Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara last year, also in Nazare waters.
“It was luck. We never know when we will be catching the wave,” Burle told Surfer Today,” I still hadn’t surfed any wave and everyone had already had their rides. Maya almost died. For me, it was a big adrenaline moment to get back there after what happened.”
Check out the video, courtesy of CNN, of Burle’s wild ride. It’s both terrifying and amazing at the same time.

This year flew! The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown and the final event of the 2013 ASP Men’s World Tour, is almost here.
Slated for Sunday, December 8th through Friday, December 20th, the Banzai Pipeline, or Pipe, is an iconic and historic wave that is often referred to as the best wave on the planet. Located off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on Oahu’s famous North Shore, the Pipe is a surf reef break known for its perfect, heaving top-to-bottom barrels and its close proximity to shore, and is it the perfect wave for those willing to charge.
But, it’s also great surf watching for the spectators on the beach. And you’re in luck since Billabong is sponsoring a contest to win a trip to watch it live!
The trip includes airfare for 2, 3 nights hotel stay, and $400 spending money.
It would be so sweet to watch this live! As we know, last year, Parko not only won the contest but also the World Title, in a gripping duel with 11 times surfing champ Kelly Slater.
ASP WCT surfers’ year-end rankings are based off their top eight finishes from the 10 ASP WCT events in 2013. Mick Fanning is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT. Here are the top 5:
1) Mick Fanning (AUS)
2) Kelly Slater (USA)
3) Joel Parkinson (AUS)
4) Jordy Smith (ZAF)
5) Taj Burrow (AUS)
Who do you think will take it all this year? Continue reading
