The world’s largest gathering of over-35 surfers is going on right now. From April 6-14, the world’s best Masters Surfers (over-35 years old) are gathering in Ecuador to compete in the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship (WMSC) in the high-performance right point break of Montañita. Over 20 countries and 150 men and women surfers are in Ecuador’s surf capital and warm beaches of the South American country.

The International Surfing Association hosts contests through the year in various categories of surf – including juniors, SUP, and longboarding divisions. The ISA, established in 1964, is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the world governing authority for surfing, but the sport has yet to make its breakthrough at the official Olympic Games.

The ISA World Masters Surfing Championship is a team competition with individual age divisions. The divisions include Men’s Masters (over 35), Grand Masters (over 40), Kahunas (over 45) and Grand Kahunas (over 50), and Women’s Masters (over 35).

Some key athletes to watch include 2012 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship Gold Medalist Magnum Martinez (VEN), who is back to defend his title, and Hawaii’s Mike Latronic, who scored day 3’s highest total heat score.

Check out the live webcast of the entire championship on www.isawmsc.com.

There were massive upsets yesterday with both Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson out of the running. Now it is down to 8: 4 Aussies, 3 Brazilians, and 1 South African.

Stop No. 2 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach recommences the hunt for this year’s world surfing crown. Clearly, the game is on as evidenced by the high-performance surfing, which yielded some incredible upsets and astonishing surfing action.

Sadly, Parko was ripping and surfed a flawless heat against Brazilian Raoni Monteiro, 30, but lost with scores of a 10 and a 9.10 to Monteiro’s 10 and 9.16. When was the last time that has happened? And, Kelly Slater was knocked in the previous heat by injury replacement Willian Cordoso (BRA), 27. But, this definitely opens up the World Title race and everyone left in the field will be thinking about it heading into the next few days.

According to Parko, “No one ever wants to lose. No one wants to lose with a 10 and a 9 either, but Raoni is surfing really well and if he beats me with those kind of scores then he definitely deserves credit. Losing out at Bells early is a lost opportunity, but it’s a long season ahead. I’m going to regroup and focus on Brazil.”

Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning, and Adriano de Souza are the top seed still in contention, at the Quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2013.

Here’s the match-up:
Kai Otton (AUS) vs. Taj Burrow (AUS)
Willian Cardoso (BRA) vs. Nat Young (AUS)
Adriano de Souza (BRA) vs. Mick Fanning (AUS)
Jordy Smith (ZAF) vs. Filipe Toledo (BRA)

After this, the next stop on the tour is Billabong Rio Pro, which runs from May 8 – 19, 2013.
