Third Annual Pacific Festival Set for September 2, 2012

The Pacific Festival is back, and the date is set for Sunday, September 2nd, 2012! This year, expect a new cool venue… The Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina, which is located on the water’s edge of the Pacific Ocean, and promises to bring a whole new vibe!

Last year’s event was held at Oak Canyon Ranch near Irvine Lake. Snoop Dogg was the official festival headliner and was joined with over 50 of independent music’s most talented live acts and DJs from around the world. Five stages housed the likes of: Cut Copy, Black Lips, The Twelves, Fred Falke, Adam Salter, and special dueling decks set by Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki himself. This year’s line-up is still to be announced.

Like last year, The Dunes will showcase favorite live music acts, mix of genres, not covering just dance music or just indie rock. There will also be the best local foods and lots of other surprises that organizers will be announcing closer to this year’s event on Labor Day Weekend.

Pacific Festival Entertainment is the vision of two groups of longtime friends with a combined 40 years of experience in music and event production. Steve Aoki, world-renowned DJ and founder of Dim Mak Records, and Mike Tunney, founder of Collaborative Media, have been friends for over 25 years, growing up together in Newport Beach. As their first business venture, Aoki and Tunney wanted to create a new music and arts festival for the Orange County community that connects culture with community; art with music; and entertainment with philanthropy, thus successfully launching the festival just last year.

Dawn Patrol pre-sale tickets are on-sale now for Pacific Festival. Organizers are releasing a limited batch of discounted General Admission tickets at $40 for loyal friends and fans. This year’s event will have 1 main stage and support entertainment areas. Tickets to this year’s event are limited and will be priced at $55-$75. 18+ age for admission.

Countdown to Shark Week 2012; Begins August 12

Get ready for Shark Week, which begins in a few weeks. It’s a full week just dedicated to sharks, and it all begins August 12 at 9 p.m. EST. The program by Discovery Channel, which first aired on July 17, 1988, was developed to help the average person have a greater respect for sharks. Shark Week is now broadcast in over 72 countries. This year, the week-long series will be celebrating its 25th anniversary, and Discovery promises to be its shark-iest ever with “specials that get you so close to the action, if you were any closer you’d be bait.”

Among the programming is the search for the great white sharks of Seal Island, South Africa, with a separate focus on one specifically, the 14-foot shark Colossus, who dominates all other sharks in the area. That segment, called “Air Jaws Apocalypse,” will premiere Sunday, August 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Seal Island is a tiny island in False Bay just off the Southern tip of Africa, where tourists can often view, from their hotel rooms, Great White Sharks as they hunt for Sea Lions. Photographer, author and shark expert Chris Fallows and legendary natural history producer Jeff Kurr team up once again to film new exciting footage of Great White Sharks breaching in False Bay.

SHARK WEEK’S 25 BEST BITES
Premieres Sunday, August 12 at 10 p.m. ET
In celebration of Shark Week’s silver anniversary, it’s a countdown of the 25 scariest and funniest moments from past Shark Week awesomeness.

MYTHBUSTERS’ JAWSOME SHARK SPECIAL
Premieres Monday, August 13 at 9 p.m. ET
The MythBusters, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, count down their top 25 shark myths of all time. They also show never-seen-before footage and reveal the No. 1 shark myth that will “literally blow people away.”

SHARKZILLA
Premieres Monday, August 13 at 10 p.m. ET
Discovery will revisit the “chomping capabilities” of the biggest shark ever to swim in our oceans: the megalodon, which was 52 feet long, weighed 100,000 pounds and had 250 teeth, each six inches long, set in jaws six feet wide and eight feet tall.

HOW JAWS CHANGED THE WORLD
Premieres Tuesday, August 14 at 9 p.m. ET
Go behind the scenes of the biggest shark movie ever, and the impact “Jaws” had on the oceans and their inhabitants.

Shark attack victims around the world discuss the terrifying moments of their confrontations, and now have devoted their lives to saving their attackers and have become some of the most powerful shark advocates on the planet.

GREAT WHITE HIGHWAY
Premieres Wednesday, August 15 at 9 p.m. ET
Discovery Channel partnered with Dr. Barbara Block, professor of marine sciences at Stanford University, to track the world’s biggest great whites in real time. They’re looking to learn more about the sharks’ mating rituals and, in particular, where they go to give birth, which still remains a mystery to scientists.

ADRIFT: 47 DAYS WITH SHARKS
Premieres Thursday, August 16 at 9 p.m. ET
This is the true story of a routine search mission over the Pacific in WWII gone awry. Two war heroes tell the story of their 47 days in shark-infested waters… and how they lived to tell the tale.

Andy Verdone, Rabbit Kekai and Dane Reynolds Join the Surfers’ Hall of Fame

Legendary coach Andy Verdone, pioneer surfer Rabbit Kekai, and Dane Reynolds, one of the most progressive surfers in the world, will be the 2012 inductees for the Surfers’ Hall of Fame. Verdone, Kekai, and Reynolds will immortalize their hand and footprints in cement for the ages on Friday, August 3rd at 10:00 a.m. in front of Huntington Surf & Sport.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the nation’s first imprint collection of legendary surfers, the Surfers’ Hall of Fame celebrated its first induction in 1997 inside of specialty retailer Huntington Surf & Sport where several slabs remain. Four years later with the blessing of the City Council and a stunning bronze statue of sport’s spiritual leader Duke Kahanamoku serving as a backdrop, the ceremony moved outside to the corner of PCH and Main; less than 100 feet from the famed Huntington Beach Pier, site of the U.S. Open of Surfing.

Here’s a little bit about the newest inductees:

Rabbit Kekai:
Surfing since age 5, Rabbit was taken under the wing of Duke Kahanamoku at age 10 and became a pioneer of the North Shore surfing scene in the ’30s, known as an innovator of drop-knee turns on short, finless boards. Nicknamed “Rabbit” for being one of the island’s fastest runners, Kekai is a living legend in the world of surfing. Rabbit won Peruvian and Makaha International titles during the ’50s, and each winter season, he can be found at every Triple Crown event, doling out jerseys, wisecracks and advice as Beach Marshall, a position he has held since the first Pipeline Masters in 1971.

Dane Reynolds:
Dane Reynolds, one of the most progressive surfers in the world, is known for his “go for broke” style of surfing that includes a number of experimental and aerial maneuvers. He competed in the 2003 and 2004 X Games and received the highest single wave score both years. His first video, “First Chapter,” won Best Male Performance in a Video and Video of the Year at the 2006 Surfer Poll Awards. Dane qualified for the 2008 World Tour, rocking to the coveted Top 10 in 2009. Reynolds had a breakout year in 2010, ending up tied for fourth in the world. Despite injuries that held him back in 2011 and thus far in 2012, Dane is known for pushing the boundaries of the sport. Many pros call him the most exciting free surfer in the world.

Andy Verdone:
The Huntington Beach High School surf coach took over from the late Chuck Allen in ’87-’88, and immediately helped the team take home NSSA National titles. Known as the “Phil Jackson” of surf coaches, Verdone parlayed Allen’s success and has built his program into among the most successful and winningest in the country, capturing 10 NSSA National Titles as well as a National Surf League Title in 2010. He has trained and coached some of the best surfers in Huntington Beach, including the Deffenbaugh brothers, Jay Larson, Micah Byrne, Shaun Ward and Brett Simpson. Year after year, 100 students try out for his squad and only 30 make the cut. Verdone’s impact on the sport of surfing in Surf City is such that one young surfer moved here from Nantucket, Massachusetts without his family just to surf for the Huntington Beach Oilers.

The Surfers’ Hall of Fame induction ceremony pays tribute to those individuals who have made an indelible mark on the sport, industry and culture of surfing. Annually, tens of thousands of visitors to Huntington Beach’s downtown area literally walk in the footsteps of surfing superstars and legends from several eras including Laird Hamilton, Andy Irons, Jack O’Neill, Robert August, Bob Hurley, Sean Collins, Kelly Slater, Lisa Andersen, Pat O’Connell, Al Merrick, Shaun Tomson and Rob Machado who are already immortalized in cement.

Famed sports commentators David Stanfield and Rockin’ Fig will serve as Masters of Ceremony.

Seven Surfing Icons to be honored at Surfing Walk of Fame

Next Thursday August 2nd, seven surfers will be added to the 2012 Surfing Walk of Fame. The new inductees were selected by a panel of surf industry veterans, former pros and surf journalists.

“The Surfing Walk of Fame board of directors is very excited with this year’s voter-selected honorees for the 2012 induction,” said Don MacAllister, SWoF Chairman of the Board. “For the past 19 years, we mail ballots throughout the world and gather votes to make our selection.”

The 18th annual Surfing Walk of Fame event is at 10 a.m. on Aug. 2 in front of Jack’s Surfboards in Huntington Beach off Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway, where surfers’ names will be memorialized in granite and places along the walkway.

This year’s seven honorees are:

  1. Hawaiian legend Michael Ho, who won the Pipeline Masters five times and the Triple Crown twice.
  2. The late Michael Peterson, winner of the first-ever pro tour contest.
  3. Surf forecasting pioneer Sean Collins who founded Surfline.com and passed away in December. Collins will be given the surf culture award.
  4. Surfboard shaper Dick Brewer, who continues to shape and innovate surfboards, and in more recent times has built tow boards for Laird Hamilton, Derrick Doerner and Garrett McNamara.
  5. Alisa Schwarzstein-Cairns, who will be given the woman of the year award. She won a world amateur title at age 15, then was named ASP Rookie of the Year and remained in the ASP top eight for four years.
  6. George Draper, founder of George’s Surf Shop in Huntington Beach, and will be given the local hero award.
  7. Stacey Wood, Dwyer Middle School’s surf coach, whose teams have won multiple NSSA National Interscholastic titles, gets the honor roll category.

This year’s honorary induction ceremony will take place during the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach on August 2.

Past recipients of the Surfing Walk of Fame honors include Duke Kahanamoku, Kelly Slater, Lisa Anderson, Tom Curren, Bruce Brown, and Eddie Aikau.

U.S. Open of Surfing: Are You Ready for the Party?

The U.S. Open of Surfing is set to hit Huntington Beach this Saturday, beckoning the almost 300,000 people that will come to town to be a part of the biggest US surfing event for nine days straight.

Are you guys ready for the music, art, free swag, crowds, and the best in skating and surfing?

Festivities will run from July 28 to August 5 on the south side of the Huntington Beach, CA Pier.

If you’ve never been, nearly 300,000 people come to town along the 14-acre stretch of sand for the massive event, which includes the big surf competition, skate and BMX areas, retail shops on the sand, and about 60 vendor booths.

Surf fans will be watching the water to find out whether 11-time world champion Kelly Slater will take another Nike U.S. Open of Surfing title, while skate aficionados will gather at the massive skate bowl to watch the best skaters in the world compete.

The US Open Music Stage, one of the most popular events of the festival, just announced its lineup of bands this past Saturday. Three nights of music includes TV on the Radio, Grouplove. Best Coast, Toro Y Moi, White Arrows, Hindu Pirates and Walk the Moon. It promises to be one of the biggest and best free concerts of the summer.

Plus, check out one-of-a-kind retail and brand experiences, public skate courses, movie premieres, 100 interactive exhibits, autograph signings, DJs and giveaways.

All events are free and open to the public and can be viewed live daily at www.usopenofsurfing.com.  With more than 3.6 million webcast viewers last year, the webcast broke viewership records and expects to deliver content to even more viewers worldwide this year.
