The 2013-14 South Bay Surf Series schedule has recently been released, so mark your calendars for the annual, five-event series for the South Bay Boardriders Club’s.
We don’t know about you, but we in the LA Area and South Bay are stoked to have surf competitions back on our stomping grounds.
You’ll want to especially highlight Saturday, February 8th, 2014, which will be presented by us truly, Becker Surfboards, at 26th Street in Manhattan Beach. We’re thrilled, as one of the original surfboard builders and surf shops in the South Bay, to be THE MAIN SPONSOR at this year’s 3rd stop.
Last year’s event had well over 200 contestants surfing, in addition to hundreds of attendees. Hey, maybe we can even get our very own Becker Malibu’s Sean Johnson into our hosted series. If we say so ourselves, we kill it when it comes to the presence we bring to the beach and hope to get the same support from years past.
In fact, let’s take it up a notch this year! Parents and groms always talk about how Becker’s event is always the best of the entire series (thank you, our wonderful fans and supporters!).
The event will run from 7am – 5pm at 26th Street in Manhattan Beach. There will be board demos, raffles, food, drink, and an assortment of beach activities open to all in attendance, contestants and non-contestants alike.
The idea for a South Bay surf club hit Mike Balzer in 2008. His son Shane was 9 and his daughter Malia was 6. They weren’t enthusiastic about their dad teaching them to surf because they wanted to play with their friends and their friends didn’t surf. That got Balzer’s creative juices going – trying to organize a group to surf. After a year of talks with various people, the club was born. It continues to bond the tight knit South Bay community of surfers and beach goers.
Happy shredding South Bay! YEWW!
